Article Templates

I use article templates to add author's names, signatures and standard disclaimers to the bottom of articles that are posted to our Q&A forum. However, from time to time the authors' credentials change.

Here's my question... I realize that if I change a template it will affect all postings with that template. However, if I add a new template with the updated information, and use it on a go-forward basis, this works. However, due to the large number of templates, the list of available templates gets large. If I uncheck the active box beside a previous templates, will that affect the older articles that used the templates? Or will they continue to show the old templates, but they will be unavailable to subsequent use? Please elaborate what the "active" box does. Thanks.

Yes, it will affect all articles where this template used.
It will not be visible in template list and it will not be included in article.

I can suggest to use "keys" for templates.
Assign some key for a template and then you can type directly in article [tmpl:include|template_key]

I've done a search in the support area for "keys" to find out more about this - but can't find anything. Where is the documentation on its use? I understand using code "[tmpl:include|13]" - but not the key. Please elaborate or provide a link to further information.

When you add articles template you can specify the "key".

If you have defined a key for your template, you can also include the template by typing in the special template include command and the template key into the editor window. i.e. By typing [tmpl:include|<template_key>] where <template_key> is the template key
